OnlyFans thots who were racking in that money might want to start looking for a real job, because the video / photo sharing company just released a statement, stating that it will prohibit sexually explicit content from its platform starting in October.
Given that the company has amassed a base of more than 130 million users, largely for adult-oriented subscription fan pages, the move came as quite a surprise. But the U.K.-based company said these changes are being prompted “to comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers.”
Here’s the official statement from OnlyFans:
Effective 1 October, 2021, OnlyFans will prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually-explicit conduct. In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines. Creators will continue to be allowed to post content containing nudity as long as it is consistent with our Acceptable Use Policy. We will be sharing more details in the coming days, and we will actively support and guide our creators through this change in content guidelines.
It’s an interesting predicament for OnlyFans, as the company is trying to raise money from outside investors at a valuation of more than $1 billion, but sex work still has a stigma that’s hard to shake. Same token, without adult content, are people still going to use OnlyFans, or is it going to wither up and die like Tumblr did when they banned porn?
There’s also the question about where OnlyFans is drawing the line, as the “Creators will continue to be allowed to post content containing nudity as long as it is consistent with our Acceptable Use Policy” wording is rather ambiguous. Is full-on sex a no-no, but a chick diddling herself with a dildo is ok? It should be interesting to see how this plays out.
Something tells me there will be no shortage of OF copycats popping up in the coming weeks to try and capitalize off of this mass exodus of users.
EDIT: Well, that was short-lived. After the backlash from sex workers all over the world, OF changed their tune just 6 days later, issuing the following statement:
Thank you to everyone for making your voices heard.
We have secured assurances necessary to support our diverse creator community and have suspended the planned October 1 policy change.
OnlyFans stands for inclusion and we will continue to provide a home for all creators.
